What to find at The Old Goat in Grand Rapids

Good food, good drinks and good music all rolled into one. What could be baaaah-tter?

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — There’s no shortage of incredible restaurants in Grand Rapids. But with so many options, how do you choose where to indulge? We, the digital producers of 13 ON YOUR SIDE Riley and Amy, set out to find the tastiest places in the area and are documenting our journey with a series called 13 Eats.

13 Eats is all about showcasing the best restaurants in the Grand Rapids area. This week, we’re trying out some gastropub delights at The Old Goat, a classic Grand Rapids watering hole.

About the old goat

Since 2015, The Old Goat has taken up residence in Alger Heights. Located on the southeast side of Grand Rapids, the restaurant is bold, classic, and pretty much everything in between.

From homemade pizzas to delicious pocket dishes and gourmet deviled eggs, The Old Goat has a little something for picky eaters and foodies alike. Add live music, rustic decor, a projector screen and dim lighting, and well, this place has it all.

The food

We decided to order the restaurant’s namesake – Grilled Cheese with Chèvre Vieux ($14.00), which includes white cheddar and muenster cheeses, roasted tomato jam and basil leaves on rustic sourdough bread. The sandwich arrived with kettle cooked fries and a tangy cream sauce for dipping.

We separated the sandwich halves and strings of delicious melted cheese spread across the plate. We were skeptical of a roasted tomato jam, expecting its sweetness to dull the savory flavor of the dish – but the jam made it even better, adding a soft texture to every bite of the crusty bread. With its buttery and savory goodness, we decided this was the most extravagant grilled cheese we’ve ever tried.

Then we shared the Pizza I Am Not My Brothers ($15.00), which includes BBQ sauce, pineapple (YES, PINEAPPLE!), grilled chicken, chives, and mozzarella medley. The thin crust pizza came straight from the wood oven, steaming with melty cheese and brimming with barbecue sauce (we’re both extra-sauce-on-our-pizza types, so this dish was perfect for us.) The pizza had an immaculate balance of flavors with the hot sauce and sweet pineapple. The crust was cooked to perfection which made us want to come back slice after slice.

The atmosphere

The interior of The Old Goat is warm and cozy, filled with rustic and quirky decor. Barrel lights fill the ceiling and industrial light fixtures pair beautifully with farmhouse chic furniture. Walking into the place was like stepping into a warm hug with the bad boy from high school – it’s cozy and cool at the same time.

We loved the general atmosphere of the restaurant which is huge by the way. With a large open dining room, long bar, and private upstairs suite, there’s plenty of space. The overall vibe is already aesthetically pleasing, but when a live band is playing the place really shines. You can see live performances at The Old Goat every Friday and Saturday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm! That’s right. Good food, good drinks and good music all rolled into one. What could be baaaah-tter?

The verdict

La Vieille Chèvre is a trendy restaurant. You can go there again and again and still be glad you went. We’ve decided it’s delicious, unique and definitely reliable. The menu has a little something for every palate, and the atmosphere is so laid back that it reminds you again and again.

We loved our entire experience there and know we will be returning for dinner, lunch and brunch. Yes, we said brunch. They have that too on Sundays!

So what are the takeaways? This restaurant has an old soul with a modern twist. It’s perfect for a date night, a guys night out, a girls night out or anything in between. We still have plenty of restaurants to visit in our busy little town, so we can’t say yet if this is really the GOAT We can say, however, that we loved every minute we spent there and its GOAT-ness is now in place for you to decide.
