Willmar Community Education offers several art-related courses. Pre-registration is mandatory for all courses. Cooking classes are listed in the Thursday newspaper’s Food and Drink schedule.

Nature Kids Art Club: three separate sessions, 1:30-3 p.m., K-5, instructor Libbie Anderson. Join us to make outdoor art. We will work on a different project each month using objects from nature and different artistic mediums. Develop your love of nature and art at the same time. Spotlight Theater Workshops: June 27-July 2, Instructor Nikki Erickson, Barn Theatre, adaptation of the classic tale ‘Sleeping Beauty, A New Musical’. Several different courses will be offered during the week. Tickets for performances will be open to the community.

  • The magic of stories: Sleeping Beauty and the Stage: Ages 3-8, July 1, 2:30-3:30 p.m., free, pre-registration required at, attendees will meet in the lobby of the Barn Theater with director, Nikki Bettcher Erickson, to talk about storytelling, the power of words and the magic of theatre. An actor from the play will then read a special story. At 3 p.m., attendees will attend a fully staged final dress rehearsal of our new musical, Sleeping Beauty.

Musical Theater Workshop: Encanto: July 18-20, Grades 1-5 and adults, $40, Roosevelt Elementary School, instructor Nikki Erickson. Everyone’s favorite new kids movie has some pretty awesome music. We will work on our singing, movement and musical theater acting skills. There will be a short, casual presentation of learned songs at the end of the week. Rustic Designs Floral Farmhouse: August 18, 9:30-11 a.m., $43, all ages welcome, instructor Mary Solbreken. Enjoy a guided tour of over 2 acres of flower gardens, then create a beautiful arrangement of fresh flowers to take home. Milan Village Arts classes have been scheduled with the full program on the site. Members receive a discount on tuition fees. Refueling costs are paid to the instructor at the end of the course. Bone-style rosemary: August 5-7, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; instructor Clarice Dieter; beginner and over, minimum age 15 years old; paint a tray in the style of Os; tuition $165, tray and supplies list at registration, advance purchases required; registration deadline July 23.

Acanthus sculpture: August 8-12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Jock Holmen; beginner and more; learn how to carve elegant, ornate leaf designs into wood; tuition $325, plus supplies; registration deadline July 23.

Silversmithing 1, 2 days: Sept. 10-11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Marilyn Hanson; beginner, no experience necessary, minimum age 16; learn the basics, including how to solder and how to use most tools; tuition $145, supplies $80-$110 depending on market price, and acetylene fee $5; no money outside; The Silver studio is available to those who complete this class; registration deadline July 30.

Stone laying: August 19-20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor William Kennedy; goldsmith or goldsmith experience required, minimum age 18; setting of round cubic zirconia stones using the pearl and brilliant cut setting and the flush or “Gypsy” setting; tuition $165; registration deadline August 6th.

Swedish wheat weave: August 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Lynette Swenson; beginner and over, minimum age 14 years old; tuition $95, supply list upon registration; registration deadline August 6th.

Are you feeling boring? Learn how to keep your edge: August 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Fred Livesay; beginners and over, minimum age 15 years old; discuss edge geometry, types of sharpening stones, technique and sorting of edges and how to manage them. Bring along your kitchen knives, pruners, plane and even lawnmower blades for plenty of handy opportunities; tuition $95; registration deadline August 6th.
