Korean artist Lee Sangsoo forges colorful and spiral animal sculptures. Defined as “drawings in the air” – its collection of animals includes cats, flamingos, poodles, parrots and other interesting creatures! His minimal sculptures are constructed from resin or stainless steel – depending on the size of the room. If the room spans more than a meter, Sangsoo uses stainless steel to create it. Each slanted face is delicately covered with soft gradients or a subtle and complementary palette. The three-dimensional and imposing sculptures were inspired by Picasso’s small abstract drawings of animals. What a wonderful contrast, right? Sangsoo even goes on to say: âLines, planes and colors are important elements that work in my work. The lines drawn in the two-dimensional sketchbook determine the great flow and form of the work, and it becomes three-dimensional in three-dimensional space. The square lines are depicted in different shapes and colors depending on the flow and twist, and you can feel the dynamism in the still work. In addition, depending on the flow, the thickness of the lines can be rhythmically thickened or thinned.

My love for cats comes as no surprise! And this playful and agile cat has my heart. The sculpture strikes a pose in its most flexible position, almost squatting on the floor. I wonder if the kitty is getting ready to play or to hunt! The colors of the cat range from a light nude to undertones of dark brown.
This colorful parrot sits peacefully on its bird stand. The crisp details of its body and wings, and its intricately sculpted beak give it an almost realistic look! Green, red, blue and yellow accents highlight the beautiful parrot.
This swan’s body is a spiral of hues of blues, teals and violets! I can quite imagine the exquisite swan lounging peacefully on a lake. Sangsoo’s love and appreciation for animals is artfully reflected in his sculptures.
Two flamingos in love! The large, towering flamingos appear to be the complete opposite of Picasso’s abstract animal designs, but at the same time, sheer simplicity and elegant beauty are seen in between.
This multicolored reindeer instantly puts me in a Christmas mood! Even though Christmas is far away. Slender limbs, an intertwined, spiraling body and well-crafted horns make this sculpture unique and precise.
Since Sangsoo covered most of the animals, he had to add a doggo or two to the mix! Sangsoo chose to create a spiral poodle that somehow manages to look fluffy. The color scheme almost reminds me of cotton candy in different colors!
This giggling hen seems ready to fly away, only if she could. Sangsoo chose the colors of the sunset for this sculpture, and something gives me a warm, rustic feel, almost like I’m about to walk into a farmhouse.
