estudio PK’s casa hormiga in buenos aires infuses lush plant life

casa hormiga: an airy and sunny intervention

The Argentinian architecture firm Estudio PK presents its latest work, a residential restoration called Casa Hormiga. Located in the town of San Fernando in Buenos Aires, the pre-existing accommodation presented itself as a humble one-story house. The main goal of the design team during the project was to preserve the footprint of the existing structure, complementing it with a light addition that “creates a link between the authentic house and the new intervention”. The resulting house presents itself as a single block divided by its lower half finished in rustic brick and its upper level which opens wide with a functional facade of white perforated screening.

Estudio PK architects are developing the restoration of Casa Hormiga to celebrate both the heritage of the house and the contemporary addition. With this in mind, the team leaves the brick facade exposed so that the original construction, once covered in a white finish, is visible. Above, the upper floor is constructed with a balloon frame and white sheet metal cladding. The openwork screen appears at the front of the house, transforming the space with its folding shutters. the team writes: ‘we perceive the duality of what was (the base of the existing house) and the new: the structure of folding sliding shutters in sheet metal which gives dynamism to the facade.’

The architects of Estudio PK continue: “Based on the possibilities and opportunities offered by the old building, the secondary partitions have been removed in order to energize the floor plan, to obtain more generous spaces and to bring more light inside the house.

“From this subtraction, a courtyard was produced which provides light and a new landscape. This perforation gives it a visual permeability by crossing the courtyard-gallery-garden sequence. New elements were added only when necessary in terms of comfort and functionality.
